Helping African Immigrants Adjust

Having completed Maine's ENCorps leadership training for people over 50, Dawad Ummah heads the Center for African Heritage—an organization meeting the needs of African immigrants. His training is being put to good use at Tidewater Farm, where refugee families are growing their own food and becoming more self sufficient.

The Grand Rapids Community Foundation is engaging people over 50 to help reframe the region's response to homelessness and address the barriers to housing security. By engaging older adults at multiple levels and in varying roles, the Community Foundation aims to demonstrate the breadth and depth of possibility that this vast and growing population offers.
